Some of the highlights include Jeronimo’s Monastery, declared a world heritage monument for exemplifying Portuguese art at its best; the Roman Gothic ruins of Carmo Convent where you will find shrunken heads, South American mummies, a jasper sculpture of the Virgin Mary, ancient tombstones, Visigothic artifacts, and coins dating back to the thirteenth century; and Saint George’s Castle, a 6th century royal palace that can be seen from anywhere in the city of Lisbon. The Lisbon coast offers beautiful beaches that range from sheltered little coves to miles of dune-backed sands. A day trip to the town of Sintra and its mystical hills dotted with fairytale palaces and extravagant villas have bewitched visitors for centuries.
